Weatherization Assistance Program
En Espanol The Weatherization Assistance Program helps low-income persons - particularly the elderly and persons with special needs - control their home's energy costs. Through this federally-funded program, Sheltering Arms Senior Services provides these services free to people who meet the income requirements.
The purpose of the program is to make homes more energy efficient. Typical measures include:
- Attic and wall insulation
- Caulking
- Weather stripping
- Heating and air conditioning repair/replacement
- Window and door repair/replacement
If your home qualifies, you will receive:
- An Energy Audit - a review of your home's energy efficiency, which identifies where air leaks may be occurring, inefficient appliances, etc.
- Installation of weatherization measures that increase the energy efficiency of your home
Who's eligible?
- Households at or below 125 percent of federal poverty guidelines.
- Your home can benefit from being weatherized.
- Harris County residents (other counties offer this program, call 2-1-1 for more information)
Priority is given to households with:
- Small children (under the age of 6).
The highest energy cost and lowest income.
An elderly resident.
A disabled resident.
To Apply
To apply for weatherization assistance, you must first complete an application for the Utility Assistance Program:
To Apply for Utility Assistance (and Weatherization)
1. Call United Way's Helpline at 2-1-1 (like 9-1-1) and ask for Utility Assistance information (starting March 10). Please note 2-1-1 will not be able to assist you until March 10. You can also look up your site online, according to your home zip code.
2. 2-1-1 staff will let you know what outreach site in the community you need to visit to complete your application.
3. Call your outreach site to set an appointment for you to complete your application.
4. At your appointment, complete an application for Utility Assistance, and also request Weatherization Assistance.
5. Please be sure to bring these required items to your appointment:
- Recent copies of your gas and electric utility bills
- Proof of household income for the last 30 days, such as recent payroll stubs or documentation on Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, Pension Funds, disability, etc.
- Proof of total members living in your household (examples include social security cards and birth certificates, or if unavailable, provide birthdays and school records or shot records)
- Photo I.D. (for applicant only)
