GOBBLE WITHOUT GUILT 7,000 runners expected in Sheltering Arms pre-feast Turkey Trot HOUSTON (November 1, 2009) –Houston’s 17th Annual Sheltering Arms Turkey Trot, presented by TXU Energy, is permission to gobble, gobble, gobble without the guilt, guilt, guilt – all for a great cause. The Thanksgiving Day tradition is scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday, November 26 across from Uptown Park at the corner of Post Oak Blvd. and Loop 610. An anticipated 7,000 pre-feast fun runners of all ages will trot Houston’s streets while helping to empower Houston’s seniors. Entry fees go directly to Sheltering Arms Senior Services to further its mission to promote the dignity and independence of older adults through service, advocacy and support for caregivers. Programs include Alzheimer’s Day Care, Geriatric Care Management and Consultation, Personal Care Assistance and Home Management services, Weatherization services and Utility Payment assistance. The event includes a 10K and 5K wheelchair competition followed by the 10K and 5K runners. At 8:05 a.m. walkers hit the streets followed by a 9:15 a.m. Kids’ K (for children ages 12 and under). Participants may register online at www.shelteringarms.org through Wednesday, November 18 or pick up a race brochure at area Randalls stores, Luke’s Locker, Memorial Park, and local running stores. Entry fees paid prior to race day are $25 for adults and $10 for Kids’ K participants (ages 12 and under). Race day entry fees are $35 for adults and $15 for the Kids’ K. There are two new features for 2009. Participants can wear an honor bib in memory of a beloved senior or qualify to earn free entry in the Sheltering Arms Turkey Trot by raising $200 by November 13. Prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers. Packet pickup and on-site registration will be held at Luke's Locker at 1953 West Gray in the River Oaks Shopping Center on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22 from noon to 5 p.m., and Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 23 to 25 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. All entrants receive a Sheltering Arms Turkey Trot T-shirt. All Kids’ K participants receive a finisher award and good luck turkey feather. A post-race party with healthy snacks and beverages will take place in the parking lot in front of Arturo’s Italian Restaurant located in Uptown Park. TXU Energy is the presenting sponsor.
