Housing and Energy Management
Of the nearly 250,000 very low-income households in Harris County, more than 41,000 represent the elderly. Many of their homes are older and lack the energy efficiency of new homes, resulting in higher cooling and heating costs. Seniors on a fixed budget often have to make the difficult decision of buying food, medicine, or electricity. Frequently the elderly have chronic health conditions that are made worse with extreme temperatures.
Through state, local and corporate funding, Sheltering Arms Senior Services provides energy efficiency measures and assistance with utility bills to bring a home to a more safe, secure and affordable condition, helping to preserve the dignity and independence of Houston’s elderly.
