History of Sheltering Arms 1893 Founded in 1893 as a residence for elderly women Became charter member of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast 1950 Began providing home care services that enable the elderly to live fuller, more independent lives in their own homes 1980 Became Houston’s preferred emergency response service provider, currently the largest independent Lifeline Medical Alarm provider in Texas 1985 Established Houston’s first Alzheimer’s Day Center 1989 Selected as the only local partner in American Business Collaborative’s Work Family Directions, a national model elder care program 2002 Established Sheltering Arms Senior Services Home Health Care, a licensed, Medicare-certified home health care agency 2004 Selected as 1 of 8 Community Partnerships for Older Adults programs funded nationally by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation.
