Ike Recovery Efforts
As much as we want to help every one of Houston's elderly affected by Hurricane Ike, we know we must take care of our most vulnerable clients first: frail, homebound seniors with limited financial and social resources. We are:

  • Assessing clients' basic needs and meeting these needs as best as possible
  • Conducting in-person safety checks on clients not reachable by phone
  • Making food and supply deliveries to homebound seniors
  • Assisting clients complete applications for disaster relief assistance

Status of Operations
Thanks to dedicated staff, like Sheltering Arms Senior Services' director of operations Marvin Bailey, our Houston  corporate office, even after a loss of power and water and water damage to the floors and ceiling, was open for business Wednesday, September 17.

The Sheltering Arms Day Center, which suffered damage and is normally follows HISD's closure for inclement weather, opened its doors Thursday, September 18 so that family members could get some much-needed respite.

Great thanks goes to the compassionate and committed direct service staff, especially those who suffered great loss and damage to their homes, who made their clients and patients a priority and continued to provide service with limited interruption. For example, Cynthia Pratt, a personal care assistant, even with a hole in her roof, borrowed $20 from a neighbor to buy gas so that she could check on her elderly client.
