Day Center

Alzheimer's disease affects an estimated one in every three families. In Houston alone, approximately 40,000 members of our community are affected by Alzheimer's. While treatment possibilities are limited and the toll on families is tremendous, the Sheltering Arms Day Center offers help and support.

The center is designed specifically for adults who have Alzheimer's disease or other forms of memory loss. The center improves the quality of life of participants and helps caregivers maintain their loved ones at home.

Sheltering Arms Day Center offers:

  • Compassionate supervision by staff experienced in dementia care
  • Low staff to participant ratio
  • On-site nurse
  • Variety of specialized activities
  • Safe, secure and well-planned environment
  • Opportunity to socialize with peers
  • Caregiver support

Specialized Programming and Therapeutic Recreation

Providing effective and appropriate programs throughout the day for participants is the most important aspect of day center services. A calm, predictable and accepting environment provides a sense of security that enables individuals with dementia to make full use of remaining cognitive abilities. A structured and carefully implemented program of failure-free activities ensures success, enhances self esteem and minimizes agitation and anxiety. The opportunity to socialize with peers also contributes to an improved quality of life. Download Day Center Daily Schedule (.pdf 43k)

Caregiver Support

The person with Alzheimer's or dementia is not the only victim of the disease. Tragic physical, emotional and financial burdens are also placed on family members providing care to a loved one. Caregivers benefit directly from the Sheltering Arms Day Center through respite, or a break, that is essential to their health and being able to keep their loved one at home. Sheltering Arms also provides counseling, educational materials and a support group.

Houston's First Dementia-Specific Day Center

Sheltering Arms established the first dementia-specific day center program in Houston, and its more than fourteen years of experience shows in the quality of care provided to its participants. The center is state licensed.
