Utility Assistance Program

Administered by Sheltering Arms Senior Services, this federally funded Utility Assistance Program assists low income seniors (60+), families with young children, and the disabled, with the payment of gas and electricity bills, when funding is available.

 

Requirements:

  • Resident of Harris County
  • Must meet the US Department of Health and Human Services minimum income.

To Apply for Utility Assistance

1. The first step in the application process is to call United Way's Helpline at 2-1-1.

2. The 2-1-1 staff will let you know the outreach site in the community that you will need to submit your application to.

3. Contact the application site phone number received from the United Way's 2-1-1, to make an appointment. This application site is for your geographic area.

4. Please be sure to submit these required items with your application:

  • Recent copies of your gas and electric utility bills, or disconnect notices (disconnect notices are only needed for Disconnect Notice Program).
  • Copies of identification for applicant and all household members, such as social security cards (not required), birth certificates, and/or shot records, etc.
  • Proof of household income for the last 30 days, such as recent payroll stubs or documentation on Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, Pension Funds, disability, etc.

Please be sure to submit copies of these required items. Failure to submit copies of the required items will result in a delay or denial of processing your application.
